Are There Modern Prophets?

What will the New Age be like? What does the Bible tell us of the New Age? The Bible speaks of the New Age, which is otherwise called the Millennium. One passage of many verses in the Bible tells us what the New Age or Millennium will be like.

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit (Joel 2:28,29).

Many people believe that spiritual gifts, such as prophecy, have ceased, but according to that passage the spirit of the Lord will be poured out even upon the lowest of people and they will prophesy.

Do we need prophets today or has their importance ceased with the death of the apostles? The apostle Paul in a letter to the Ephesians tells us of their importance and of other teachers of the faith.

And he gave some apostles; and some, prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and some teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of god, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive (Ephesians 4:11-14).

Although I don't think that what was meant by "unity of faith", was a one-world religion. I do think that we still have a ways to go before we can get there. Men like Edgar Cayce have made great strides in bringing us closer to a "unity of faith." From the above passage we can see the importance of prophets and others to guide the saints until we reach such a time when we would no longer need them because we would be united in faith.

Just as with any area, we must be careful. In mainstream religion, we also have our Jim and Tammy Faye Baker's. But just because we have people in mainstream religions that are only in it for the money, it doesn't negate the importance or need for religions. Similarly, with modern prophets and psychics we must be careful. Because there are charlatans and those that only have an interest in money, it doesn't negate the importance of physics and modern prophets.

How can we discern the true prophets from the false prophets that lie in wait with cunning craftiness to deceive? Again the Bible gives us some guidance. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gave us this on the subject:

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? (Matthew 7:15,16).

This is the yardstick by which we shall measure a prophet, the fruits that they have produced. How did they live their life? Was it a life of self-aggrandizement or was it a life of self-sacrifice? Did the fruits of their labor produce good fruit? Was their work a positive influence on people?

We can ask these same questions of the modern-day prophets to see if they measure up to the qualification of a prophet [Exceprt from Til The Unity of Faith (c) Roger Gibby].

Edgar Cayce was one such man that measured up to the qualifications of a true prophet.
